Individual Counseling

Any student who has an academic, behavioral, social or emotional concern is welcome to the school counselors' assistance or the counselor may arrange a meeting with a student at the request of a parent, teacher, or administrator.  Counseling sessions are short term, intended to give a student an impartial adult perspective or some options for them to pursue.  If it appears that a student could benefit from "therapy" or more substantial counseling from a mental health professional, the information will be shared with the student's parent or guardian.  With parent permission, the counselor or other school representative may serve as a liason between school and the outside therapist.

Higher Ability Program

The Higher Ability Program works toward the maximum intellectual development of high ability students in an atmosphere that recognizes the uniqueness of the individual.  The Higher Ability educational environment helps the students attain their social-psychological, intellectual, physical, and creative potential.  this environment is developed through:

  • incorporating basic skills into differentiated learning experiences.
  • providing opportunities to exercise leadership roles and responsibilities.
  • encouraging development and utilization of higher level thinking strategies.
  • establishing a challenging, diverse, motivating, and open-ended classroom atmosphere.
  • guiding students to be active creators of ideas and products.
  • helping students gain an understanding of themselves and others.

These seventh and eighth grade programs are found in the Social Studies, Language Arts, Math and Science departments.

Character Counts

Program Goal:

To build an environment that reinforces the traits communities value and improve the qualities of honesty, respect and responsibility among our youth.

Program Overview:
Above and Beyond is a program designed to recognize students, grades 7-8, for displaying acts of thoughtfulness and respect. The program provides meaningful and appropriate challenges to students that promote character development. Above and Beyond sets clear expectations for students to engage in moral action in terms of civility, personal responsibility, helping others, sportsmanship, and service to school and community.
Teachers and counselors are involved in identifying students that display observable behaviors that promote good character.   Upon nomination, observable student behaviors are acknowledged by the administrative staff once a month. Students also attain recognition by receiving a certification of appreciation. These initiatives will yield positive results in student behavior, school climate, and academic achievement.
